Synopsis
Flightless birds lead a mostly happy existence, except for
Red (Jason Sudeikis), who just can't get past the daily annoyances of life. His
temperament leads him to anger management class, where he meets fellow misfits
Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb. Red becomes even more agitated when his feathered
brethren welcome green pigs to their island paradise. As the swine begin to get
under his skin, Red joins forces with Chuck and Bomb to investigate the real
reason behind their mysterious arrival.
In the 3D animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, we'll
finally find out why the birds are so angry. The movie takes us to an island
populated entirely by happy, flightless birds--or almost entirely. In this
paradise, Red, a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck, and the volatile
Bomb have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious
green piggies, it's up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs
are up to.
A film about flightless birds attacked by country music
loving pigs who steal their eggs, only for the birds to steal them back by
catapulting over Piggy Island, seems a stretch.
The film begins on a tropical island populated entirely by
happy bird-creatures -- well, almost entirely. Our short-tempered hero, Red,
has been sentenced to anger management, where he meets a speed-demon fowl named
Chuck and a volatile bomb. But when a boatload of green pigs show up and drop
anchor on Red's home, he and his buddies take it upon themselves to figure out
what these mysterious porkers are up to.
The movie takes place on Bird Island, an untouched paradise
habited by birds who are naive and innocent, who know nothing of the outside
world. They treasure eggs, and are all carefree and easygoing, except for few.
Red, the lead of the film, had lost his temper quite a few
times and had gone to court and had been sentenced to anger management courses,
led by Matilda. who has also had anger issues before but turns it all into a
hippie and zen-like lifestyle. Another angry bird is Chuck, who moves fast and
talks fast. Bomb, another main character, frequently blows up due to his
disorder IED, Intermittent Explosions Disorder. Bomb lives in a bomb shelter.
The birds are visited by pigs, who are dumb but funny. The
birds and pigs befriend each other and have a party, but Red does not trust the
pigs at all.
The Angry Birds Movie exists because the video game franchise has been a phenomenal success since its release in 2010.
ReplyDeleteThree billion downloads of various Angry Birds games later, it sounds like a reasonable idea.
The Angry Birds Movie is fitfully funny but tends towards a madcap mixture of comedy and action which never develops much forward momentum. The joke-a-minute approach misses more than it hits, although the bright animation and adorably-rendered characters are decent compensation.
ReplyDeleteIf you loved the game, you might enjoy watching the movie with so many shapes of elements.
If you're one of the few people who never downloaded Angry Birds, the game's premise is delightfully simple: Flightless, multicolored birds slingshot themselves into pigs' fortresses so they can retrieve their stolen eggs. For the movie, that idea is fleshed out even more and tells the story of how those birds got to be so angry in the first place.
ReplyDeleteAt least a few worthwhile life lessons, however, survive this otherwise infectiously inconsequential whirlwind, not least its defense of the occasional black mood amid a riot of color.
ReplyDeleteThinking about it, I highly doubt many of the kids in the movie theater had even played, or heard of Angry Birds at all prior to this film release. Despite this, they seemed to enjoy it, suggesting that a love of the app is no prerequisite for having fun with this energetic, simple but charming kids’ comedy, whatever your age.
