Central Intelligence (2016)

A mild-mannered accountant who used to be a "big man on campus" meets up with his old pal, a one-time bullied geek who is now a lethal CIA agent. Before he knows it, he gets pulled into the world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get them both killed anytime.

The story follows a one-time bullied geek, Bob, who grew up to be a lethal CIA agent, coming home for his high school reunion. Claiming to be on a top-secret case, he enlists the help of former "big man on campus," Calvin, now an accountant who misses his glory days. But before the staid numbers-cruncher realizes what he's getting into, it's too late to get out, as his increasingly unpredictable new friend drags him through a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get them both killed in more ways than Calvin can count.

After he reunites with an old pal through Facebook, a mild-mannered accountant is lured into the world of international espionage. The "loser" that the accountant remembers is now a CIA contract killer who ropes him into helping foil a plot to sell classified military secrets.

Bullied as a teen for being overweight, Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) shows up to his high school reunion looking fit and muscular. While there, he finds Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart), a fast-talking accountant who misses his glory days as a popular athlete. Stone is now a lethal CIA agent who needs Calvin's number skills to help him save the compromised U.S. spy satellite system. Together, the former classmates encounter shootouts, espionage and double-crosses while trying to prevent worldwide chaos.

  1. The inspiration behind this character "Bob" has always been Tom Hanks in "BIG" with an added twist. He's a grown man who's extremely childlike and views the world thru exuberant and enthusiastic teenage eyes.

Prepared to hate this trailer but the grenade under the car with Kev trying speed walk away made me laugh pretty hard I have to admit.

  2. The actor is very thorough in that description, and it’s hard not to get excited for the film when Johnson is this enthusiastic and dedicated. That’s just part of his endless charm. He’s sure to be extra charming in Central Intelligence, in which he plays an endearing, overgrown man-child who just happens to be a valuable genius working for the CIA.

There’s comedic and action scenes aplenty, but the crown jewel of “Central Intelligence” is clearly the flashback to Johnson’s character in high school, when he was known as “Fat Robbie.”

  3. Bob’s willingness to risk his diminutive pal’s life makes more sense when it’s revealed that they went to high school together, where Bob was a chubby, bullied nerd, and Hart’s character was the most popular kid.

Dwayne Johnson really caught my eye in this one. It may sound strange to say this since it’s an action comedy but I loved his growth as an actor in this one. I’ve pretty much watched all of his movies and always felt he tried too hard. In this movie, he went more subtle and was so much more interesting to watch.

  4. I’m particularly sensitive to the issue of bullying so at some points I felt bad enough for the character that I wanted to cry then the movie immediately picks you back up with a joke. It was a little bit of an emotional roller coaster for me but for others it may be a smoother ride. I still laughed out loud quite a bit.
