After the worldwide box office success of Ip Man 1 & 2,
Producer Raymond Wong with Director Wilson Yip and original production crew is
back together with martial art artistes Donnie Yen and other original casts in
the continuing biopic of legendary Wing Chun Master, Ip Man. who late in life
became Bruce Lee’s mentor. This final installment will also starred the
legendary champion Mike Tyson.
Martial-arts master IP Man (Donnie Yen) takes on a crooked
developer (Mike Tyson) and his gang of brutal thugs.
Donnie Yen delivers a suitably understated turn as the mild-mannered master, mingling with the masses and seeking nothing more than an ordinary life with his martial-arts school and his family.
Throughout the whole movie screening, the main focus is on the face-off between Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson, who plays as a main character in the movie. The excitement part is placed on the scene between two of them on who will be defeated in the show. However, it’s a bit out of my expectation for the movie, as both Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson has a tie match in the fight. No winner for the whole process of the show. I assume the reason being is because Mike Tyson is a famous world heavyweight championship, hence it should not play a show where IP Man defeated him. At least he is a well-known boxing legend. It definitely won’t be the other way round as IP Man is the main actor of the whole movie. Since no movie shows a main character defeated in its own movie objective. That is just my two cents thought.
IP Man 1 movie focuses on “Survival” objective, while IP Man 2 focuses on “Everyday Life and Making a Living” objective. This new IP Man 3 focuses on “Life” objective itself. If we were to compare against all the 3 series, I would say that IP Man 3 is the series with less hard-hitting action, as it came to a matured scene of production of the whole movie process. A well-known martial arts master usually changed to be love of peace in their third level stage of life, where Love, Life, and Family is in their placement of life, rather than being too active or obsessed with becoming famous.
There is a little disappointment in certain part of the movie, which is about the character Mike Tyson involvement and Bruce Lee involvement. I expect Mike Tyson to be more involved in the script, but it seems like only a short involvement in the fighting scenes. Same as Bruce Lee as well, where there is only a little part in the story, where he teaches Donnie Yen (Master Yip) on dancing.
IP Man movie series shows truly great Chinese Martial art films. It consists of the humble personal life, fascinating actions and bittersweet moments. It greatly represents the Chinese culture in the film.
