ReplyDeleteJeff Nichols's sci-fi chase movie mixes super-powers, religion and an offbeat cast to dazzling effect.
ReplyDeleteJeff Nichols is an extraordinary talent. Not sure I've seen a recent film as great as "Take Shelter," a dark and brilliant work that struck a deep chord within. In so many ways, the film exposed one of the great fears of this confusing modern era. How can a man truly provide for his family in a world essentially rigged against such noble endeavors? How do all of us avoid mental breakdowns when every ounce of logic tells us trouble is on the horizon? We must face the future, emboldened by the inspirational strength of those we love.
ReplyDeleteThe premise setup in the first 20 minutes is intriguing and then the movie decides to explain itself and becomes like a lame episode of X Files or Star Trek where you know every single twist and turn.
ReplyDeleteThe characters are flat and boring along with the dialogue they barely say and the boy's powers just arbitrarily do this and arbitrarily do that. When you get to the end it makes absolutely no sense as to how the kid got to be the way he is and why the resolution was a better solution than the initial setup at the beginning of the movie on the commune.
As father and son speed toward some doomsday reckoning, Nichols keeps us guessing in a way that evokes "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Midnight Special is a more modest, more enigmatic film than that one was, but it’s no less gripping.
ReplyDeleteI was so excited walking into Midnight Special, but I was very disappointed. The film was very slow, and had little action. It had no point to it, and the ending was just stupid. Overall, Midnight Special is very disappointing.
