Don't Breathe (2016)

The story follows a trio of young thieves, who decide to rob the home of a reclusive blind millionaire as they see as an easy target. However, after breaking into the house, they discover that the man is actually a dangerous psychopath who begins hunting them down one by one.

A trio of reckless thieves breaks into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking they'll get away with the perfect heist. They're wrong.

Rocky, a young woman wanting to start a better life for her and her sister, agrees to take part in the robbery of a house owned by a wealthy blind man with her boyfriend Money and their friend Alex. But when the blind man turns out to be a serial killer, the group must find a way to escape his home before they become his newest victims.

This is Alvarez's first film in three years since his violent and solid remake of Evil Dead, and it is with this sophomoric debut that solidifies the genre filmmaker as someone with obvious talent.

  2. If there's one gripe about the film, there's a plot twist that doesn't quite work, but that itself is a minor complaint compared to the many things the film gets right and does so well.

The cinematography is amazing as well as the creative sound design, so much so they are characters within the film themselves.

  3. The script does a solid job with the difficult task of maintaining constant tension in a physically and conceptually contained situation, levying unpleasant new challenges on the characters one after another without ever growing too hectic or overblown.

  4. From the very first image we get a sense of dread that never lets up. After a brief introduction to the characters, we are placed in a world that is surprisingly layered. It’s tricky to create sympathetic characters that happen to be small time criminals.

Getting in is harder than usual, given the many extra door locks and bars on windows. Nobody stops to think how these defenses might impact someone wanting to make a quick escape from within. They know the man inside is blind, so why should they worry?

  5. Eschewing the supernatural or motive-less psychopaths, Alvarez’s newest thriller focuses instead on a gang of organized and experienced teen thieves going for the one big score which will change their lives and quickly finding themselves in over their heads.

The film points up again his inability to settle on a conclusion, instead offering a false ending which then blossoms into an extended final sequence which ultimately lacks power because it is separated from the tense initial set-up.

  6. The ending leaves room for a sequel, but it's not just a half-baked teaser. As with all strong horror stories, the conclusion of one dangerous scenario feeds the fear of more to come.

Don't Breathe is a masterful combination of suspense and violence that'll have you squirming in your seat and enjoying every minute of it.

  7. Alvarez's Evil Dead left many wondering what this visually talented director would do next. Inconsistent and offensive, Don't Breathe is not the follow-up many will have wanted.
